Love Sausage?
Then you probably love Currywurst
No need to fly to Hamburg or Berlin to get one of them down your face
Here’s the secret to making your own at home
I was first introduced to that delicious street food Currywurst in Osnabruck Germany way back when the band James and their album ‘Laid’ was number 3 in the charts (work that one out).
I was sent to the Schnellimbiss (takeway) to get frikadelle mit pommes, bratwurst mit mayo und pommes, currywurst mit pommes and the final order was pimmelkopf mit pommes.
How the guy laughed, so did all the guys behind me.
"You just ordered a penis head and chips mate!” they all roared.
“Which fricking one?” I said?
“Pimmelkopf mit pommes hahahahhaha” they retorted.
You live and learn.
But anyway I digress.
I was encouraged by my roomie to get myself the currywurst, a steamed or fried sausage (bratwurst) usually pork, cut into bite-sized chunks and seasoned with curry ketchup, a sauce based on spiced ketchup or a tomato paste topped with curry powder served with steaming hot fries covered in mayo.
Wow. I was hooked, no wonder those Christmas and German market stalls bang them out for about £7 squid a pop.
But stop, you don’t have to wait for the arrival of those markets, or even book yourself a flight to Hamburg or Berlin to get hold of this deliciously tasting and satisfying German banger, or no, you can make them in your own home (Whaaaaaa we hear you say!)
We’ve come to your rescue again and written up the recipe and method below.
Enjoy sausage lovers and bitte schön.
Ingredients
Pack of bratwurst from Aldi or Lidl (or wherever you can find them) - Or use a bockwurst or similar type of sausage
Tomato ketchup
Curry powder (Medium)
Method
STEP 1
Put the Brats (sausages) on/in an ovenproof dish/tray and whack in them in a pre-heated oven on 200°C for around 20 minutes (you don’t need to cover them), turn them over after about 10 mins - Or if your oven’s kaput just fry them.
STEP 2
Whilst the Brats are cooking, grab a small to medium bowl (like the bowls you eat olives out of or even soup), squeeze in a load of ketchup and take a full teaspoon of curry powder and mix together, taste, add more curry powder depending on how spicy you like it
STEP 3
Once cooked (they will probably be split but that’s all good) take the Brats out of the oven and leave to stand for a couple of minutes, cut into bite-sized chunks and drizzle over your currywurst spicy ketchup
STEP 4
Crack open a lovely German beer, maybe a Warsteiner, and sit down on your own somewhere so you don’t have to share these yummy scrummies and just shove them down your gullet
BOOM SHACKA LACKA - Homemade Currywurst
MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
Curry 36
Some say the best currywurst in Berlin, this one is in Kreuzberg - Berlin
Curry 36 is a real institution in Berlin.
It all started in 1980 with the shop in Mehringdamm and only one manager. Then the franchise grew and became famous all over the world - it is said that Tom Hanks himself picked up his Currywurst there.
Neighbouring the Mustafa Kebab and its interminable wait, Curry 36 in Mehringdamm offers a fast and inexpensive service (2 Currywurst + French Fries for less than €5). Here workers and partygoers meet. They eat standing, on the go, sharing a table with others, a beer in hand - a must in Berlin. The stand is open until 4am!
Mmmmmm Food.
A picture of burger and fries. Just delicious.
