Gift Over by Dim Bulbs
Dim Bulb? Gigawatt Album!
Following their 2019 EP Aperitif and a successful summer tour that saw them performing at Newark Festival, Waterside Festival, and Dot-to-Dot, the long-awaited new album by Dim Bulbs has finally arrived. The Nottingham-based noise rock band released their new album Gift Over in July this year, offering 10 energetic and grunge-infused tracks.
Recorded under the I’m Not From London record label at Moot HQ in Nottingham, Gift Over is a strong new release from Dim Bulbs, contributing to the city’s vibrant music scene and reviving noise rock decades after the subgenre first emerged in the 1960s. The album is a raw and exhilarating exploration of noise rock that grabs you from the first track, blending sweeping, chaotic guitar riffs with immersive, driving rhythms. It creates a soundscape that is both abrasive and meticulously curated.
Gift Over dives into themes of societal disillusionment and existential frustration, with lyrics that seem to simmer in the gritty atmosphere of amplified angst. A standout is the fourth track, Servitude, which masterfully contrasts calmer, soothing moments with crashing, head-banging beats. This contrast amplifies the impact of the song’s intense lyrics, making the emotional weight feel fully realised.
New listeners to Dim Bulbs' latest album can expect a rollercoaster of emotions as each track showcases compelling drum, bass, guitar, and vocal elements. For fans of punk rock with unconventional time signatures and alternative song structures, Gift Over delivers stimulation and balance. There’s nothing “dim” about their music—it’s more like 1,000 gigawatts of energy.
Guitarist Charles Agar described the album as a “combination of heavy guitars, off-kilter rhythms, and verbose ramblings that can (sometimes) sit somewhere between angry and creepy.” He advises new listeners to “expect the unexpected.”
Although Dim Bulbs are still relatively new on the scene, they are eager to share their music live, play alongside bands they admire, and make their mark in crowded venues in the coming years. For them, the thrill lies in writing and performing together, and they seem determined to keep that excitement alive.
They’ll be launching their new album at The Carousel on the 25th October, we’ll put the gig up when we get deets but bang it in your diary.
