Mary In The Junkyard
Mary in the Junkyard, a London-based trio, are one of the UK’s freshest and most exciting acts, carving out their own space in the world of experimental rock and noisy guitar pop. Comprising guitarist and vocalist Clari Freeman-Taylor, bassist and viola player Saya Barbaglia, and drummer David Addison, the trio’s music blends raw, punk-inspired riffs with unexpected melodic twists and poetic depth.
Their rise to fame has been meteoric, with a reputation built on a series of raucous live performances, notably over 20 shows at Brixton’s Windmill. The band also left their mark at major festivals like Green Man and End of the Road. But it was their debut single, "Tuesday," that truly caught the attention of the UK music press, garnering rave reviews and establishing them as ones to watch.
2024 has been a standout year for Mary in the Junkyard. Their single "Ghost" saw them land on the cover of So Young magazine, while the press support from heavyweights like Dazed, Fader, and i-D only added to their growing momentum. Regular rotation on BBC Radio 1 and a B-listing at BBC 6Music cemented their place in the UK's indie music scene. In March 2024, they sold out their largest headline show to date at Corsica Studios, with a string of festival appearances and a debut EP, This Old House, fast approaching.
Their latest single, "This Is My California," released in December 2024, marks a pivotal point in their sound. Clari Freeman-Taylor explains the track as a nostalgic look at the idea of California — a place seen through films and TV, an ideal of paradise and success. The song’s blend of serene guitar pop and emotional complexity continues to showcase the band's ability to weave depth and richness into their energetic, noisy sound.
Despite having only a handful of tracks to their name, Mary in the Junkyard have quickly become one of the most buzzed-about new bands in the UK. With their upcoming shows, including a massive gig at Fabric in February 2025, it’s clear that they’re set to continue their unstoppable rise.
